If you have rabbits in your garden, rodents outside your
house
or are stranded somewhere in the wilderness and need to catch a small
animal to eat for your own survival, knowledge of easy-to-make traps and
snares may come in handy. Most of these traps can be made out of simple
household items or even trees, branches and other items.
This is meant for catching pheasants, grouse or other small
birds that spend a lot of time on the ground. By taking a Coke bottle or
a small shovel, dig a hole 6 inches in diameter and 10 to 12 inches
deep. The more circular the better. Make a trail to the hole with corn
and cover the bottom with corn. When the pheasant or grouse comes along,
it will stick its head into the hole, which is too deep for the bird to
reach the corn. Often the bird will fall in and the hole will be too
narrow for it to fly out as its wings will be stuck against the sides.
This is such a simple trap that all you need is a barrel, a
board, a table and the right direction. This is for catching nosy
possums and raccoons who will climb over anything or under anywhere to
get to
food.
Simply place a barrel next to a table and fill it a third of the way
with water. Then place an 18-inch board a little more than halfway off
the edge of the table, over the trash barrel full of water. Then place
food at the end of the board right before dark so the birds don't get
it. The water weights down fur and is deep enough that an animal usually
they can't jump out. Modify this for just about any animal.
RABBIT SNARE
Rabbit snares require some construction and tools. Use stainless steel
20-gauge wire, a tape measure, needle-nosed pliers and some string. Cut
some stainless steel wire to 21 inches. At one end about an inch in,
make a 1-inch loop and twist the wire around itself until it is tight.
Through that smaller loop, run the other end of the wire through, making
a bigger loop and then repeat what you did with the other end (make a
small loop and twist it around itself). Then take a long piece of string
and tie it on to the second loop you just made. Set it out and perhaps
bait it with vegetables.
